Description
The WAFFLE STOOL is a downloadable design that can be produced with a domestic FDM 3D printer and hardware store dowels without industrial machinery.
Responding to my dissertation on open-source design, my desire for this project was to bridge the gap between complex craftsmanship and creative enthusiasts who lack the ability to produce furniture. In an era of mass consumerism, it’s harder to become ethically aware and appreciate craft. With 3D printing growing rapidly and becoming increasingly more accessible and intuitive, the ability to instantly download and print models, customise them, and eliminate complex tools, machinery, workshop space, and carbon footprint associated with shipping serves a gateway to solving this issue.
This project aims to connect consumers with creative culture, by projecting individuality through sourcing materials and choosing colour. This casual stool redefines traditional flatpack assembly, into something you actively bring to life. This product celebrates 3D printing through material efficiency, precise jigs and its unique curvy and ergonomic aesthetic. Utilising varied internal infill densities, more strength is added where the dowels enter the seat, maximising efficiency without compromising structural integrity. Imbedded in the seat includes a tapered entry to accept dowels at different tolerances and lock the legs into a stable position. This removes the requirement of complex industrial jigs and fixings for security. An optional 3D printed jig can be printed to accurately assist in cutting the dowels to length using a standard Japanese saw. Additionally, dowels can be oiled to give the product a premium finish.
